TETRAS

Technology transfer for thriving recirculating aquaculture systems in the Baltic Sea Region (TETRAS)

Sustainable aquaculture plays a significant role in ensuring food supply, preserving natural water resources, and driving economic growth in coastal and inland regions. TETRAS is an international project dedicated to fostering integrated and sustainable solutions for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). The project aims to enhance cooperation across the Baltic Sea region, reduce competitive disparities between countries, and accelerate innovation and market access.

The project will establish a platform for sharing cutting-edge technologies, business models, and best practices. A key focus of TETRAS is industrial symbiosis – where one process’s waste or by-product becomes a valuable resource for another – ensuring efficient use of water, energy, and other resources.

TETRAS is based on four pilot projects, each addressing specific RAS challenges:
✔ Treatment of RAS discharged water for reuse in other industries;
✔ Utilization of geothermal resources in aquaculture;
✔ Optimizing land and resource use for a fully circular agro-industrial park;
✔ Development of small-scale RAS models to raise awareness of aquaculture.

The project outcomes will be summarized in a comprehensive portfolio of solutions, providing recommendations for policymakers, investors, business representatives, and researchers. This will include investment-ready business cases, licensing and regulatory guidelines, technical recommendations for future innovators, and policy measures to support RAS technology adoption. Providing standardised tools for integrating RAS into regional development strategies, TETRAS will contribute to the sustainable use of aquatic resources and the transition to a circular blue economy.

“Innovation happens where science, business, and a sustainable vision meet. TETRAS is not just shaping new opportunities for recirculating aquaculture – it is helping the Baltic Sea Region become a global leader in the blue economy.” Erika Zavackienė, project coordinator
